PROJECT #4 Celina Jayne, Confessions
Celina Jayne is a Sydney-based artist who interacts with everyday people through embroidery. Each confession or quote, provided anonymously, is embroidered onto a small square of calico which becomes part of the art installation for other viewers to read. The constantly-changing exhibition will build progressively as people participate and more embroidered pieces are added.
Rachel Piercy, Acting Art Gallery Director, explains “This is a really unique concept that encourages interaction by the local community… it relies on it. The end result will be driven by their contributions, and will not only be aesthetically stunning, but provide deep insight into who we are as a community”.
To take part in this exciting initiative, visit the Gallery and complete a confession card between Friday 16 September and Sunday 9 October. Contributions will be collected from the drop-off box, posted to the Artist, who will create the embroidered pieces. These will then be posted back to the Gallery and installed on The Wall.
“To launch the project here in Taree, we’ll use pieces embroidered by Celina Jayne during an exhibition she recently held in Redfern”, adds Rachel. “But it’s our locals who will really bring the installation to life, and we’re hoping to see people from all walks of life embrace the concept and help us create something wonderful”.
Curators of the exhibition at The Bearded Tit, Redfern said of the artists’ work, “Celina Jayne needles her way into the heart and loins with embroidered confessions from strangers, their loose threads and crawling thoughts found on the walls of the Salon”.
All works are for sale, and will be available for collection at the end of the show.
