Puppets and Paint - The Art of Bruce Rowland
For many, Bruce Rowland is a well known Newcastle based painter of figurative subjects, however few will know that he is also an accomplished and highly skilled puppeteer and puppetmaker.
This exhibition explores the versatility and professionalism of this artist across these art forms. He has been a finalist in the last three Naked & Nude Art Prizes and continues to develop his commitment to figurative painting with over 50 years of exhibiting. The Newcastle Regional and Maitland Regional Galleries have awarded him Survey Shows.
His career as a puppeteer and puppet maker began in 1966 when he was invited to join the famous “Tintookie” Marionette Troup. He travelled and performed with the company on their first Asian Tour. In 1972 he formed the Newcastle Marionette Theatre which regularly gave performances during the 1970s and 80s.
This is the first time that the marionettes and paintings have been exhibited together.
